There is a special place in hell for those who don’t take good care of their food, and in San Francisco, it’s called The Hell Room.
If you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself there for free tacos on Friday nights, but if you can’t afford them, you might want to look elsewhere.
“This is the city that we’ve lived in for more than 100 years,” says Mark, who runs The Hell House restaurant in the Mission.
“There’s not much else to do.
It’s very nice.
It has an atmosphere.”
Mark was born and raised in the Bay Area and has lived in San Jose since 2004.
“The Hell Room” opened in 2005.
Today, the place is packed with regulars who can’t wait to get to their tables and take a bite.
The bar is so busy that you’ll likely be standing around waiting for tables to open.
“If you have a reservation, the wait is long, but it’s worth it,” says Matt, a bartender at The Hellhouse.
Matt says he’s known The Hellroom since the beginning.
“It was kind of a weird place.
It was a restaurant,” he says.
“I was always told, ‘You’re gonna have a good time, but you’re gonna be late.'”
Today, the Hell House is a staple in San Sebastian.
But it wasn’t always like this.
Back in the ’80s, The Hell room was a popular spot for young professionals, according to Matt.
He remembers the menu as diverse as it was famous.
“We had the food, we had the drinks, and then we had a little bit of everything else,” he recalls.
“And it was a little too eclectic.
There were so many different things that you could go on.”
The Hellroom opened in the former Mission Bay office building on Valencia Street in the early ’80g.
The space, which is now home to restaurants including El Capitan and Tacos El Capito, served up everything from tacos and burritos to beer, margaritas, and burgers.
Matt remembers the place being like a mini-Tacos El Cazador in the mid-’80s.
“There was a lot of diversity, there was a bunch of different cuisines that were popular,” he said.
“You had Mexican, Mexican food, a lot different types of meat, some of the meats were very different.”
It was a cool place to be,” he added.
Today, The hell room has been transformed into a food hall with two separate sections.
The first area features food from the Hell house, while the second area features fresh ingredients and fresh ingredients.”
When you go into The Hell Restaurant, you’re going to see a different menu every time,” Matt says.
He says the restaurant also offers an in-house bar, which allows patrons to bring in their own beverages.
Matt also remembers that in the past, people would pay $6.50 to get their food in the Hell Room on Friday.
Today that price is $5.
But the restaurant does not allow those who cannot afford to pay a higher price to take advantage of the special menu.”
You’re going back to the days of the ’60s and ’70s, people were going to get the taco,” Matt said.
“We had an attitude. “
When I was growing up, The Bay Area was kind a different place,” he explains.
“We had an attitude.
We had this ‘we’re all in this together’ attitude.
You just got to try to make it work.””
I think that’s what makes The Hell restaurant special,” Matt adds.
“If you want to eat a taco, you gotta pay a taco.”
