Bundaberg, Australia, September 16, 2017 — Australia is the second country to officially announce plans to legalize ginger beer.
The Australian Government announced Tuesday that ginger beer would be made legal in the country’s first ever liquor store.
“The ginger beer is Australia’s first beer brewed with ginger and has become a popular alternative to alcohol and has been gaining popularity for over 20 years,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement.
Ginger beer is made with the ginger root, which is also the main ingredient in ginger ale, and the dried leaves of the ginger plant, which has been used to make ginger beer for thousands of years.
A spokeswoman for the Federal Government said ginger beer was a popular drink in the states of Victoria and Queensland, which both have an active ginger industry.
As of Monday, it was legal to purchase and consume ginger beer in Australia and around the world.
